Campaign parameters describe an instrumented origin. They do not alone prove a piece of content caused a purchase decision.
01STORY BRIEFThe idea in three screens.3 SCREENS

A UTM tells you about the click. Not the whole story.
Campaign parameters describe an instrumented origin.
Keep first touch, last link and customer-declared source separate. A personal recommendation may precede a tagged visit. Do not erase that nuance in one number. Unattributed share remains unknown; it is neither failure nor hidden success to claim.
This publication’s TokPortal links carry an editorial source and article identifier. They help recognize some visits, not reconstruct every prior exposure. A reader may return without parameters or on another device. Reporting should state coverage and avoid treating identifiable visits as the entirety of influence. Equally, unattributed outcomes should not be claimed for the publication merely because its content could theoretically have contributed earlier in the journey.
A source label is an observation, not a biography
A visit carrying a campaign parameter tells you something useful about that visit. It does not tell you every influence that preceded it. Someone may discover a product in a video, search for it later, return from a bookmark and eventually buy after a support conversation. Conversely, a tagged visit can come from a link shared outside the original channel. Keep event-level evidence separate from a story about the person's entire journey. Mutable profile fields are especially dangerous when they overwrite the source attached to an earlier event.
Keep the evidence attached to the event
- 01Visit
Record the observed source and time.
- 02Identity
Link events only through a justified, permitted method.
- 03Outcome
Distinguish first purchase from returning activity.
Editorial model: a way to reason about the process, not measured platform results.
Define the acquisition reference before comparing channels. A first positive payment, a trial signup and a returning purchase answer different questions. Preserve timestamps and original source parameters on the relevant events, respect consent requirements, and document missing attribution. Report both attributed outcomes and the unassigned portion so uncertainty stays visible. The goal is a decision-grade account of what can be traced, not a claim to know everything that caused a purchase. Useful attribution makes the next experiment clearer while leaving room for unobserved influences.

Ask for a defined series, then interpret it
A common observation window is easier to maintain when the measurement request is explicit. This read-only example asks for daily gained views over a stated period; change the dates to your evaluation window.

- 01Read the contract
GET /api/ext/analytics/contract describes the available metrics and their meaning.
- 02Respect missing data
Series and exports depend on plan access. Missing or redacted values mean unavailable, not zero.
- 03Compare like windows
GET /api/ext/analytics/export/videos provides a plan-aware CSV for further analysis. Keep mature cohorts separate from recent posts.

02FIELD KITFrom concept to practice.2 SCREENS

Name each attribution view precisely.
Adapt this to your audience, budget and test scope.
Put it to work.
- 01Name each attribution view precisely.
- 02Deduplicate buyers across content.
Notes & sources.
The limit. Adding assisted conversions from several articles can count the same customer repeatedly.
Further reading is linked throughout this article. Worked examples explain a process; they are not campaign results.
THE ORGANIC CLUB is an editorial project initiated by TokPortal. That relationship is separate from the evidence behind claims. Editorial signatures and image credits are explained in our policy. Our editorial policy →
