THE SIGNAL

Two languages, two real reading experiences.

A multilingual publication gives each version a stable URL and connects matching translations.

1 / 3 · YOUR OWN PACE

Language switching should preserve the article rather than always return home. Cultural references may need rewriting. Hreflang links identify variants while each version has its own canonical URL. Check navigation, alternative text and error messages, often forgotten after body translation.

French and English versions can share a translation identifier while keeping their own metadata. This simplifies language switching, corrections and link checks. If a translation is missing, do not create a false variant filled with the other language. Flag the gap in the pipeline and publish only complete versions. A consistent route map should connect equivalents rather than make search engines or readers guess which page matches.

Expansion starts with an editorial budget

A language switch creates an expectation that the article, interface, examples and linked journey will make sense in that language. Translating titles while leaving the body or destination unchanged is not a complete edition. Before expanding, choose which audience questions justify local coverage and who can review the result. Keep terminology consistent, but allow examples and explanations to change where cultural context demands it. Search architecture can connect language versions; it cannot supply the editorial judgement that makes them useful.

Editorial model: a way to reason about the process, not measured platform results.

This publication currently ships one English edition. The practical next step is to maintain a complete, well-sourced corpus before multiplying its maintenance burden. If additional editions return, give each a stable URL, accurate language metadata and appropriate alternate links, and preserve the original meaning through review. Do not publish empty language routes merely to claim international coverage. Track corrections across editions so a changed claim does not remain wrong elsewhere. Scaling languages responsibly is an ongoing publishing commitment, not a one-time batch translation task.
