Autonomy is a ladder, not a switch.
The AGD model distinguishes manual work, AI assistance, approved orchestration, agentic management and broader autonomy.
A team can be advanced in analysis and manual in publishing. Identify decisions delegated to the system and human recovery options. Moving up only helps if control quality follows. Keeping spending approval can remain rational even when briefs are fully automated.
For every stage, ask how an error is detected and who can correct it. Reversible creative classification and live purchasing have different consequences. You can therefore delegate them differently without inconsistency. The maturity model makes those choices explicit instead of pushing the whole organization toward a maximum level. Operational readiness matters more than how autonomous the workflow sounds in a presentation.
Promote autonomy one reliable action at a time
Agent maturity is easier to discuss as a set of demonstrated abilities than as a personality label. Can the system preserve the brief, choose the correct account, detect missing inputs, preview side effects and reconcile uncertain results? Test those behaviours with bounded tasks before expanding authority. A workflow that writes excellent captions but loses track of publication state is not ready for unattended publishing. Keep the evaluation close to the actual operations the system will perform, including ordinary mistakes and unavailable services.

Editorial model: a way to reason about the process, not measured platform results.
Increase scope only when the evidence supports it. Start with drafts and read-only checks, then allow a narrow class of reversible operations, then consider more consequential actions under explicit limits. Keep the rollback or escalation path visible at every stage. Review failures for the missing control rather than merely asking the model to be more careful next time. The useful outcome is a smaller set of tasks completed predictably with clear records. A broad assistant that needs constant rescue can create more coordination work than it removes.

The limit. The most autonomous level is not necessarily best for every organization.
